Finding the voice: who speaks in your work?

We announce the 5th Masterclass organized by WHEN, in collaboration with WHEN Hub and with the support of the Estée Lauder Emerging Leaders Fund and Vital Voices, as a part of the program “A room of their own”, which is designed to empower emerging and underrepresented women writers in Greece. The program focuses on education, networking, and visibility for women creators, fostering an inclusive literary community that amplifies women’s voices and promotes equality through the power of storytelling.

Masterclass #5, with Lucie Rico

Wednesday, 13 of May, 16:00-18:00, at WHEN Hub

A piece of literature is not just a story -it is a voice that unfolds over time. But who is speaking? And how does that voice emerge, shift, or resist? How is it influenced by gender, by what is allowed to be said, and by what remains unspeakable ?

We will explore the question of narrative voice beyond technical choices (first person, third person, etc.) and approach it as something that carries desire, memory, contradiction, and silence. We will consider how voice can be shaped by displacement, translation, and linguistic friction. What happens when one writes in a language that is not entirely “home”? And how does this distance open new possibilities for tone, rhythm, and perspective?

Lucie Rico worked for several years in publishing and new media before dedicating herself to literary and screenwriting work. She has directed several series and short films and has written feature films. She is an associate professor of creative writing. Her novels Le chant du poulet sous vide and GPS and have received several prices. Her books are published in Greece by the Stilvi publisher.

The program “A room of their own” aspires to become a point of reference for literature in Greece-as a tool for social change, feminist action, and the empowerment of women. Through this initiative, WHEN continues its mission to promote equality, empowerment, and feminist leadership, this time through literature, imagination, and the stories of the very women who are changing the world around them.
