The school of no bias

The program “The school of no bias – everyone strong, everyone equal” aims to address three main challenges concerning girls and young women in Greece, which are documented by academic research and by the experience of WHEN (previously known as Women On Top).

The differences in the treatment between boys & girls by their teachers and the perpetuation of gender inequalities they cause.

The “confidence gap” in girls aged 10-14 prevents them, as young women, from claiming positions of responsibility.

Occupational segregation fosters low participation of girls and young women in educational and professional fields related to science and technology and in positions of responsibility.

The aim of the project is to establish gender equality in schools and to empower girls from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds, so that they have the foundations and tools to claim equality in education and the workplace – one of the fundamental human rights that is often violated for women of all ages due to gender inequalities that become entrenched during childhood and adolescence.

Aiming to strengthen students’ media literacy, to cultivate educators’ skills so they can pass this knowledge on to children, and to raise awareness among media professionals about the perpetuation of gender stereotypes in media content, the new cycle focuses both on the systematic development of critical thinking around gender stereotypes and on the development of skills for producing inclusive content that promotes equality and the acceptance of diversity.

 

The project activities

1. Through the development of specialized educational material on media literacy, school visits, and workshops at the WHEN Hub, the project will empower both boys and girls to critically confront stereotypes and act as agents of change, as well as educators who will integrate this new knowledge into their classrooms.

2. It will also create dialogue between young people and professionals from the media, advertising, and social media sectors through organized meetings, where students will have the opportunity to transform from passive content receivers to active content creators, proposing alternative representations that promote justice and inclusion.

3. The program aspires to act as a catalyst for a society that does not view the media as reproducers of inequalities, but as allies in promoting equality and democracy. In this way, School of No Bias continues to build the future of a generation that will recognize, reject, and reshape messages related to gender, paving the way for a fairer and more inclusive public discourse.

FAQ

Why register on the educators’ networking platform?

The platform is a networking tool for educators who are curious or concerned about gender equality issues, such as stereotypes, gender bias and occupational segregation. By registering in the platform, you can liaise with other teachers about the issues that trouble you, and also seek out other educators with whom you can get in touch to organise common initiatives.

Does WHEN implement activities for students at school?

Not yet, but we will, soon. You can sign up for our project newsletter to receive updates and news about our future activities.

How do I use the Educational Guides?

We have created 4 educational guides, one for each main theme of the project:

  1. Helping primary school teachers familiarise themselves with tools that facilitate girls’ psychosocial empowerment
  2. Helping secondary school teachers familiarise themselves with tools that facilitate girls’ psychosocial empowerment
  1. Training educators on issues of gender equality and unconscious bias.
  1. Create awareness among School Career Counsellors about the gender stereotypes that may influence the effectiveness of School Career Counselling and acquire the tools they need to prevent and/or address these stereotypes.

Each guide includes a theoretical part, as well as practical advice and suggestions for educational activities. 
We suggest that you download the guide or guides that are most suitable to your role. Once you study them, you can draw from them the materials that are more relevant to your students, and also on the challenges that you, as a teacher, are faced more often with.
