GatE: Towards a Green Energy Transition with the Equal Participation of Women
The transition towards a more sustainable economy cannot be truly fair without the equal participation of women. WHEN is participating in the European GatE project (Gender Equality in the Green Energy Transition), a two-year initiative co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme, which aims to strengthen women’s presence and leadership in the green energy sector.
Although the green energy sector is growing rapidly and creating new professional opportunities, women remain underrepresented, particularly in technical and leadership roles. GatE seeks to address the systemic barriers that limit women’s access to the sector, with a particular focus on women from underrepresented groups.
The project builds on an innovative collaborative model bringing together public authorities, businesses, educational organisations, civil society organisations and women themselves, with the aim of creating a more inclusive ecosystem for the green transition.
As part of GatE, the following will be developed and implemented:
- Vocational Education and Training (VET) programmes tailored to the needs of the green economy
- Mentoring and professional support initiatives for women who want to enter or advance in the green energy sector
- Training programmes for trainers and educators
- Research-based policy tools and practices to remove gender-related barriers
- An educational and collaborative digital platform, as well as an Observatory for Gender Equality in Green Energy, ensuring the project’s results have a long-term impact
One of the project’s first key outcomes is the Gender-Responsive Blueprint, an action plan that serves as a roadmap for integrating the gender dimension into policies and practices related to the green energy transition.

At WHEN, we believe that the green transition is also an opportunity for social change. Gender equality is not simply one aspect of sustainable development; it is a prerequisite for it. Through our participation in GatE, we are contributing to creating more opportunities for women, strengthening their skills, and supporting the energy sector in making full use of its entire talent pool.
The project is being implemented by a consortium of ten organisations from Greece, Belgium, Spain and Norway, bringing together universities, public authorities, research organisations and civil society organisations around a shared goal: an inclusive green transition that leaves no one behind.
