A room of their own | Masterclass #2

What do we mean when we talk about the novel

WHEN, in collaboration with WHEN Hub and with the support of the Estée Lauder Emerging Leaders Fund and Vital Voices, is delighted to announce the launch of the program “A room of their own”, designed to empower emerging and underrepresented women writers in Greece. The program focuses on education, networking, and visibility for women creators, fostering an inclusive literary community that amplifies women’s voices and promotes equality through the power of storytelling. As part of the program, five in-person and online Masterclasses will be held with acclaimed Greek (and international!) women writers, where participants will develop their creative writing skills.

Masterclass #2, with Amanda Michalopoulou

Thursday, January 15, 18:00–20:00, online

Paraphrasing the well-known title by Raymond Carver (What we mean when we talk about love), writer Amanda Michalopoulou will take us on a headlong journey through the vast territories of the novel: ascents and descents of plot, lakes of condensed meaning, dried-up swamps of inspiration, and stormy seas where heroes and heroines swim-or simply float. Wear comfortable clothes where you can hide overflowing ideas, and bring plenty of questions.

Amanda Michalopoulou was born in Athens. She had her literary debut by winning the short story award of the magazine Revmata and with her first short story collection Outside, life is colorful (1994). She has written nine novels, three short story collections, one play, and a novella. Her most recent novel is The journey of one woman into another (Patakis Publishers, 2025). She won the Award of Novel of the magazine Read for Giantes (1996), the International Literature Award of the American Federal Arts Foundation and the Liberis Liber Award of independent Catalan publishers for I would like (2005), as well as the Petros Haris Short Story Award of the Academy of Athens for a bright day (2012). Her works have been staged in the theatre and translated into more than twenty languages. More information at amandamichalopoulou.com.

The “A room of their own” program aspires to become a landmark for literature in Greece, a tool for social change, feminist action, and women’s empowerment. Through it, WHEN continues its mission to promote equality, empowerment, and feminist leadership: this time through literature, imagination, and the stories of women who are changing the world around them.
