A survey by It\u2019s Just Period, Deon Policy Institute &amp; WHEN.<\/h6>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em><strong>1 in 8 women has struggled to afford period products<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"button nvm-button btn-with-bg turquoise-bg rounded\" href=\"https:\/\/when.org.gr\/en\/research\/period-poverty-in-greece\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>READ THE SURVEY RESULTS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A new nationwide survey by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/itsjustperiod.org\/\">It\u2019s Just Period<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deonpolicy.org\/\">Deon Policy Institute<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/when.org.gr\/en\/\">WHEN<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0shows how widespread period poverty is in Greece. It also looks at the stigma around menstruation and how menstrual pain affects daily life. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mrb.gr\/\">MRB Hellas<\/a><\/strong> was the scientific partner, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lidl-hellas.gr\/\">Lidl Hellas<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medwomensfund.org\/\">Mediterranean Women\u2019s Fund<\/a><\/strong> funded the survey.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Period poverty is not a distant problem that affects only marginalised people and groups. It is a harsh reality <strong>for a significant number of women and girls in Greece as well<\/strong>. The new survey by It\u2019s Just Period, Deon Policy Institute and WHEN, with MRB Hellas as scientific partner, is the first to document it with a nationally representative sample.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The survey was carried out in December 2025 <strong>with a sample of 2,000 people<\/strong>, as part of MRB\u2019s long-running \u201cTrends\u201d study. It looks at four key aspects of the issue:<\/p>\n<ol dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>whether people can afford period products,<\/li>\n<li>the social stigma around menstruation,<\/li>\n<li>which policy measures people favour, and<\/li>\n<li>how period pain affects people\u2019s ability to function day to day.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The results show that period poverty is about more than being unable to buy a product. <strong>It affects women\u2019s daily lives, education, work and social participation, as well as their dignity and gender equality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h6 dir=\"ltr\">Key findings<\/h6>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>1 in 8 women (12.5%) say that at least once in the past 12 months, they could not afford to buy period products.<\/li>\n<li>The figure rises to 19.2% when respondents are asked about another woman in their household.<\/li>\n<li>1 in 10 women (10.2%) have used makeshift alternatives to manage their period because they could not afford products.<\/li>\n<li>Also, 16.6% say that at least once in the past year, they went without basics such as food, bills or medical expenses so they could pay for period-related needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Some women carry more of this burden than others. Among women who describe themselves as completely unable to make ends meet, <strong>these figures nearly double<\/strong>. By region, <strong>Thessaloniki stands out: 28% there have gone without basic necessities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These difficulties also keep women from education, work and social life:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>9.3% have missed at least one day of school or university because they had no period products.<\/li>\n<li>10.6% have missed at least one day of work.<\/li>\n<li>16.9% have cut back on social activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Period poverty is not only financial. The survey also shows that <strong>stigma around menstruation persists<\/strong> and that <strong>period pain disrupts everyday life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>Almost 6 in 10 people (59.7%) believe women have felt shame or taboo about their period. Society is named as the main cause (36.3%).<\/li>\n<li>49.8% of women, almost 1 in 2, say that period pain has disrupted their ability to function at least once in the past 12 months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6 dir=\"ltr\">From data to solutions<\/h6>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Based on its findings and on international best practice, the survey sets out a full set of policy proposals to tackle period poverty in Greece.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>It proposes:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>Reducing or abolishing VAT on period products, which are currently taxed at the highest rate of 24%. Cutting it to 13% or 6% would bring Greece in line with other European countries and with EU recommendations.<\/li>\n<li>Extending the &#8220;\u03a1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c0\u03ad\u03ba\u03c4 \u03c3\u03c4\u03bf \u03c3\u03ce\u03bc\u03b1 \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5&#8221; (\u201cRespect your body\u201d) school programme nationwide and making it permanent. This way, access to period products and to information about menstruation would not depend on where people live.<\/li>\n<li>Introducing a \u20ac130 annual \u201cPeriod Voucher\u201d for people who menstruate, aged 10\u201324, in less developed areas.<\/li>\n<li>Introducing price caps on essential period products, wherever they are sold.<\/li>\n<li>Introducing paid menstrual leave for women with severe dysmenorrhea, with a medical certificate, following Spain\u2019s example.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The proposals also call for regular monitoring of retail prices and for working with the private sector.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You can find the full study in Greek, \u201cPeriod Poverty in Greece and Proposals to Tackle It\u201d, here:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"button nvm-button btn-with-bg turquoise-bg rounded\" href=\"https:\/\/when.org.gr\/en\/research\/period-poverty-in-greece\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>READ THE SURVEY RESULTS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em><strong>About the initiative<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>The survey is an initiative of It\u2019s Just Period, Deon Policy Institute &amp; WHEN.
